Military Heritage Museum Summer History Camp Support

For the past couple of years, we have provided support to the Military Heritage Museum for their Summer History Camps.  The camps are attended by youth ages 10-15.  This provides a great opportunity for us to interact with the youth and provide them an opportunity to learn about and experience amateur radio.

As it stands now, the days we will be supporting the camps are as follows:
June 17, 19, 20
July 8, 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, 22, 24, 25.
Basically, four weeks of Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

It is anticipated that we would work with about 6-8 youth each day, depending on the number of kids who have signed up for camp for that week.  Right now, it looks like we would be slotted for the 1100 - 1200 time period for those days.  The actual days and times of are support are not set in stone at this time, but this tracks with what we have done in the past and what is currently being planned.

For our hour, we will divide the youths into two groups.  While one group will be doing the Get On The Air (GOTA) experience, the other group will be given a class with hands on exercise.  At the end of 30 minutes, the two groups will switch.

Where do I need help?

Obviously, as always, we would need people out in radio land to be on the other end of the radio for the QSOs with the youth.  "Stocking the Pond" is our way of ensuring that the youths have someone they can talk with, someone who is familiar with what is happening (that these youth are in summer camp), and helps makes maximum use of limited time.

Also, to reduce the workload of the on-site volunteers, I could use members willing to come to the museum and either help with the GOTA experience or with the classroom presentations.  All of us have commitments (i.e. doctors appointments) that we have to go to, so having multiple folks available to help at the museum makes things run much smoother.

So, if you are willing and able to help with this important program, please send an email to Don Kumpost, KG5RVW, email [email protected] letting me know what days and in what capacity you are willing to help.

NASA On The Air- NOTA

Many of us are aware of various “On-The-Air” programs such as Parks On The Air (POTA), Islands On The Air (IOTA), but how many of you have heard of NASA On The Air?  For the past several years, NASA has been celebrating milestones of NASA and the space exploration program with On-The-Air events.

The events and corresponding weekends for the remainder of 2025 are as follows:

Historic Date Events -- 2025 NOTA Dates

Amateur Radio Clubs at twelve NASA field centers participate in this event, operating with various different modes and on various bands.  Besides receiving some neat QSL cards, you can get points for contacting the stations which will lead to certificates later on.
